This morning I want to share with you some ideas on mentorship and advice. It appears to me that there is nothing inherently good, bad, right or wrong about advice. It seems to be more about how open we are and how we use it. There have been times I’ve taken advice, both solicited and unsolicited.

The butcher shop owner told my wife once that they just weren’t getting the footfall they needed to survive. He said he’d have to close down if things didn’t pick up. They obviously didn’t. But there’s so much the butcher shop could have done.

As a young naive apprentice, I had the benefit in my training of the wisdom of a practical man and master of his craft. “Assumption is the mother and father of all fuckups young man”, he said once as he stared beyond me dismissively. What he actually said was; you’re a fool, but that’s ok you’re supposed to be.
Have You Ever Failed?
Have You Ever Failed? How did it feel? Maybe you’re still living it. In a sense I think all of us still live our failures to one degree or another. However, it helps us deal with this reality in a positive way to have a definition of failure that helps us rather than hinders us, y’know. In real terms, ultimate terms, there is no failure, only a broader understanding of things. That only comes about by virtue of having the experience.
Why The Construction Industry Is A Toxic Place To Work
I’ve worked in the construction industry for most of my adult life, since I was 15 actually. And for a long time, it put money in my pocket. I’m grateful for that. I’m also grateful for what working in this business has taught me, and it has taught me plenty. But it’s a toxic game to operate in and everyone I speak to in the construction industry agrees with me.
